Juvenile Probation and Parole Within the Executive Branch of state government, the Department of Family Services, Field Operations Division administers community-based social work staff (probation) and aftercare supervision through regional and county offices. Two District Courts, Sweetwater and Campbell County, support and direct their own juvenile probation staff independent of the state system. Juvenile probation and aftercare officers do not carry a firearm. They are not classified as peace officers and do not have the power to arrest. It is both the DFS policy and state statute that prohibits officers from carrying a firearm. At the time of the survey, it was not under consideration to allow the officers to carry a firearm. There are some private companies providing juvenile probation and aftercare supervision services. Adult Probation and Parole Within the Executive Branch of state government, Department of Corrections, Division of Field Services provides supervision for adults in the community who are on probation or parole, including an intensive supervision program. These officers do not carry a firearm. They are not classified as peace officers but do have the power to arrest offenders on their caseloads who are on probation or parole. There is a Wyoming Department of Corrections, Field Services policy that prohibits officers from carrying a firearm. At the time of the survey, it was not under consideration to allow the officers to carry firearms. While the Wyoming Department of Corrections supervises all felony and misdemeanor probation and parole cases; there are a couple of locations where courts utilize private entities to supervise misdemeanant cases.
