Avoiding the Pitfalls Between Counselors and Probation Officer Relationships

SESSION INFO

Tuesday, March 12, 2019
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Session Type: Workshop

As we begin to see an increase in Substance Use Counselors and other treatment providers working in conjunction with correctional facilities and supervision departments, it is possible that relationships between counselors and probation officers will become challenging when it comes to coordinating services with clients. It is the intent of this workshop to focus on potential relationship pitfalls and difficulties while working together and to show how developing partnership skills and support for each other is essential. Those in both professions will become more aware of each other’s role as well as the perhaps differing approaches that may be needed to carry out each other’s respective responsibilities. By exploring challenges between counselors and probation officers, participants will better appreciate the need for healthy communication and respect for the ultimate decisions made by each other when working with difficult clients. In addition, they will be more prepared to engage in coordinated, collaborative relationships that further the main goal of reducing recidivism and focusing on rehabilitation.
