Bureau of Justice Statistics Presents: Updates on Community Corrections Data Collection Efforts

In this session, staff members from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) will present updates on a variety of data collection efforts related to community corrections, including efforts to expand the number of probation agencies included in the Annual Survey of Probation. The BJS and RTI International have been working together to determine whether there are agencies that meet the definition of probation agency but are not included in the annual survey. Attendees will also learn how BJS obtains information relevant to community corrections through its Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI), a survey administered to individuals in state and federal prisons. SPI (last conducted in 2016) collects individual-level information on prisoners, including demographics, current offenses, criminal history, substance use and treatment, and prior probation and parole sentences. BJS and RTI representatives will also discuss national parole trends focusing on admissions to prison due to a revocation, a topic that ties into the spring special edition of APPA’s Perspectives and uses multiple BJS data sources.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Mariel Alper
Statistician, US Department of Justice : Bureau of Justice Statistics
Mariel Alper has been a statistician in the Recidivism and Corrections Units at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) since 2016. Her work is focused on measuring recidivism using RAP sheet and administrative data and on corrections collections on prisoners and community corrections. Prior to coming to BJS, she was a Senior Research Associate at The Pew Charitable Trusts and a Research Fellow at the University of Minnesota Law School. She received her PhD in Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Matthew DeMichele
Director, Center for Courts and Corrections, RTI International
Matthew DeMichele is the Director of the Center for Courts and Corrections Research at RTI International. He is a senior research sociologist and has conducted criminal justice research for more than 15 years, focusing on correctional population trends, risk prediction, community corrections, and domestic extremism. Dr. DeMichele uses mixed-methods approaches to investigate complex problems facing criminal justice systems in the United States and abroad.
Danielle Kaeble
Statistician, US Department of Justice : Bureau of Justice Statistics
Danielle Kaeble has been a statistician in the Corrections Unit at the U.S. Departments of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) since 2014. Her work is focused on corrections collections including the Annual Surveys of Probation and Parole and the National Corrections Reporting Program. Prior to coming to BJS, Danielle was a statistician at the U.S. Department of Commerce. She received her M.S. in Applied Economics at Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences in Washington, DC and her B.A. in Economics at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO.
