Going Against the Grain: Essential Tools to Successful Supervision of High Risk Sex Offenders

Maricopa County has experienced a change in its approach to Intensive Probation Supervision over the last 10 years. Conventional supervision methods have not always been successful in setting the tone and goal needed to sustain offenders in the community, so officers have implemented various evidence-based practices to assist in supervision. In this session, officers will compare and contrast previous and current supervision strategies as well as explain how non-traditional supervision may help build better bridges between offender and officer, ultimately assisting in positive behavior change. Participants will be provided with useful tips to help break down the mental barriers that may limit a sex offender officer’s efficacy and will be shown how building trust between themselves and their defendants can assist in effective supervision. The presenters will further illustrate how individualized case management along with the utilization of the containment model can foster passion for officers, provide perseverance for defendants, and enhance the endurance of continued supervision.
