It’s More than just a Job! Helping Citizens Successfully Return Home

Do you ever wonder why someone with whom you have worked hard to help find a job suddenly loses the job? Sometimes within a matter of weeks or even days? Rest assured, you are not alone. For many years, corrections professionals have spent countless hours providing support to offenders needing employment. This support often includes referral to general education programs (pre-GED, GED, high school, or college classes) or vocational programs (career enhancement, apprenticeships, etc.). Why is it that such efforts are not always successful? In this workshop, the presenters will share findings from a study of educational and vocational program effectiveness and impact on successful reintegration into community. They will provide concrete recommendations and strategies to promote the correctional interventions that have the best chances of producing results and truly increasing individuals’ chances of success. Participants will be able to complete a brief checklist on effective reentry programming that helps them assess how well their own programs are in preparing citizens to successfully engage in the community. Finally, participants will have ample opportunity to learn and practice some of the most effective strategies during the workshop.
