Recruiting for a Modern Community Supervision Environment
SESSION INFO
Monday, March 11, 2019
11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Session Type: Workshop
The American Probation and Parole Association partnered with the Council of State Governments-Justice Center to better understand pressing workforce issues currently facing the community supervision field and to develop strategies and identify best practices to effectively address them. APPA conducted interviews with community corrections leaders to identify best practices on recruitment, training, evaluations, and retention. Through the interviews, APPA found that in recent years, there has been a shift in the characterization and job description for probation officers. As such, many agencies have opened recruitment to a pool with a more diverse skill set than before. This workshop will provide an overview of APPA and CSG Justice Center’s project on workforce issues and will report on some of the findings related to changes in recruitment strategies by some agencies.
