DV in the DC: An Integrated Approach to Supervising Offenders with Domestic Violence Offenses

This workshop will provide an overview of the domestic violence (DV) treatment and supervision model utilized by the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA) in Washington, D.C. CSOSA is responsible for the supervision of individuals serving terms of community supervision for deferred sentencing agreements, civil protection orders, probation, supervised release, and parole. Its domestic violence specialized unit takes an integrated and holistic approach to supervising the DV offender, utilizing a unique treatment approach that includes certification of officers in the Duluth treatment model. Programming to address special conditions ordered by the releasing authorities is specifically tailored to the DV offender, including programming for anger management, domestic violence intervention (DVIP), and family violence intervention (FVIP). Supervision of the DV offender takes identified behavioral health needs into account as well, and supervising officers work in close collaboration with community-based mental health core service agencies and community support workers to ensure client needs are addressed. Included in this useful presentation will be a discussion of methods, including LAP Alerts and collaboration with DC SAFE, that provide a heightened focus on those deemed to be highest risk to public safety.
