One Million DWIs: Building a Service Continuum to Reduce Recidivism of High Risk Drunk Drivers

In 2017, over a million drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated, with almost 11,000 alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities. How do you determine who is most at risk, and how do you change this behavior? This interactive presentation will make use of the combined expertise of the Director of Traffic Safety at Responsibility.org, the Director of the National Center for DWI Courts, and the APPA Probation Fellow to provide an overview of the most recent evidence-based practices for triaging and supervising high-risk drunk drivers. This includes the latest research on the use of assessment tools to determine risk and needs, supervision strategies, and the use of DWI courts in working with both alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers. In addition to learning how to work with DWI courts, participants will learn best practices in community supervision strategies and treatment programming to help criminal justice and treatment professionals maximize their effectiveness at reducing risk to the community.

Erin Holmes is the Director of Traffic Safety at the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility where she manages Responsibility.org’s traffic safety portfolio and partnerships, and is involved in the development of traffic safety and criminal justice policy. Prior to joining Responsibility.org, Erin was a Research Scientist at the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) in Ottawa, Canada.
Mark Stodola
Probation Fellow, American Probation and Parole Association
As NHTSA’s Probation Fellow, Mark Stodola brings over 30 years of experience working in the field of court management and adult probation in Arizona. Mark worked at the Maricopa County Adult Probation Department for 18 years serving in a number of capacities including field supervisor and division director.. Mark later became the Court Administrator of the Tempe Municipal Court where he
served for eight years. Most recently Mark served as Program Services Manager in the Adult Probation Services Division of the Arizona Supreme Court where he had oversight of treatment programs for Arizona’s Adult Probation Departments. Mark has presented training on topics surrounding high risk drunk drivers at national, regional and state conferences throughout the country.
