Justice Counts: You Can't Change What You Can't Measure

When policymakers react to criminal justice trends like increases in reported crime, all too often they must do so based on stale, submerged, or scattered data or on anecdotal evidence. Criminal justice policymaking requires timely and actionable criminal justice data. Justice Counts, a bureau of Justice led project, is a suite of tools built by the field, for the field that creates a community of data to drive decision-making. The Council of State Governments Justice Center along with a probation agency from our founding states will provide an overview of how Justice Counts helps policymakers better understand the ways that past reform efforts and are shaping the flow of people through their jurisdictions and help shape the narrative with up-to-date data and resources from Justice Counts.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Sarah Lee
Senior Policy Analyst, Council of State Governments
Sarah Lee supports policymakers to make better decisions using criminal justice data as part of the Justice Counts initiative. Prior to joining the CSG Justice Center, Sarah was a public defender in Maricopa County, Arizona, where she represented indigent clients in Early Resolution Court. She also served as a public defender in St. Lawrence County, New York. She earned her BA from the University of Pennsylvania and her JD from New York University. She is admitted to practice law in New York.
Vibha Venkatesha
, Council of State Governments
Vibha Venkatesha supports policymakers to make better decisions using criminal justice data as part of the Justice Counts initiative. Prior to joining the CSG Justice Center, she worked with the City of Detroit’s Returning Citizens’ Task Force since its inception. In her roles as policy analyst and communications director, she researched and developed legislation and community outreach initiatives to reduce recidivism rates and managed communications. Vibha is also on the Board of Directors for Amnesty International USA. She has led workshops on human rights issues; been an expert consultant at the UN Office of Human Rights, where she drafted the World Programme on Human Rights Education; and presented to the UN ECOSOC forum. She has a BA in political science and sociology with honors from Wayne State University.
