Promoting Employee Wellness and Developing a Resilient Workforce
SESSION INFO
Monday, January 6, 2020
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Session Type: Workshop
While our work in community corrections is very rewarding, officers face a variety of challenges inherent to the profession. Given these risks, staff need to be provided with tools to address physical, mental, emotional health and well-being as well as professional development opportunities. This workshop explores the efforts of the San Diego Probation Department to provide officers with resources geared towards employee wellness and professional development. The Department provides comprehensive wellness support from recruitment through retirement through a variety of strategies including peer support to address personal or professional crises and services offered by a Probation Chaplin. The Department promotes the Spirit of Blue Courage which focuses on the “human development” of a peace officer with a commitment to the nobility of our profession. The Department also provides opportunities for the development of leadership competencies that impact wellness, interpersonal skill building, ethical decision-making, etc.
