In Their Shoes: Navigating Community Supervision

Step into the shoes of individuals under community supervision in this interactive simulation that highlights the everyday challenges they face. Participants will take on different roles, each with unique circumstances, and navigate a series of real-world tasks like job searching, transportation, and supervision check-ins. Each "week" of the simulation represents minutes of decision-making under pressure, followed by a brief presentation on real-world statistics and outcomes. By the end of this 90-minute workshop, participants will have a deeper understanding of the systemic barriers and hardships that make successful reintegration so difficult for justice-involved individuals. This immersive experience fosters empathy and sparks conversation about needed reforms to create a more supportive, effective reentry system. The workshop will conclude with reflection and discussion.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Margoth Tello, MPA
Policy Specialist & Executive Board Member, Return Strong
Margoth Tello holds a Doctorate in Public Policy from UNLV and a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Utah. Her doctoral degree focused on reducing women’s re-incarceration in Nevada.
In her current role as an Executive Board Member and Policy Specialist with Return Strong, a prison advocacy organization, Margoth has helped with legislative bills and works on criminal justice policy and program implementation at the state and organizational level. In both her previous roles as Program Manager at the Las Vegas Municipal Court and the Salt Lake County Criminal Justice, Margoth successfully managed multiple projects, oversaw specialty drug courts, educational programs, and special initiatives.
Margoth is a seasoned professional with a strong background in public administration and program management, specializing in working with vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, refugees, and veterans. With over six years in the criminal justice field, Margoth has made a significant impact on her community. Certified as a Trauma Informed trainer and a SAMHSA trainer for Trauma in the Criminal Justice System.
Margoth remains dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of those she serves, including her work with Return Strong. Margoth also serves as the APPA are representative for Nevada.
Crystal Voight
Employment Specialist & Board Member, Return Strong
Crystal Voight is a Project Manager with a large construction company, having started her career with no experience and steadily working her way up to a management position. Her journey from the bottom rungs of the industry to a leadership role is a testament to her determination and resilience.
Crystal is a dedicated advocate for prison reform and a board member of Return Strong, an organization focused on amplifying the voices of incarcerated individuals. Having experienced the justice system firsthand, Crystal was once incarcerated herself. Despite the challenges she faced, she successfully rebuilt her life and is now deeply committed to paying it forward.
Through her role at Return Strong, she helps those recently released from prison gain employment opportunities and access resources, ensuring they receive the support they need to succeed like she has. Her work is driven by her personal experience of overcoming obstacles and finding success after incarceration.
Crystal’s passion for advocacy and her lived experience make her a powerful force for change, as she uses her journey inspire others and create pathways for justice-involved individuals to thrive.
