SESSION INFO

Tuesday, January 7, 2020
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Session Type: Workshop

Vicarious trauma is a growing concern for professionals who work closely with populations having experienced significant exposure to trauma. This is particularly true when working with victims of violent crimes. Probation and parole officers are unique in that they work closely with both violent crime victims on a continuing basis in a supportive capacity, while simultaneously supervising the perpetrators of violence in order to prevent re-victimization. This dual role often results in compassion fatigue and disproportionally contributes to burnout amongst probation and parole officers. We will discuss how to recognize warning signs within ourselves. We will further discuss how to effectively supervise probationers who perpetrate violence, while best serving the victims of those offenses. We will also discover practical ways to sustain the necessary vibrancy while serving victims of violent crimes. Join us to explore interactive techniques to help recognize vicarious trauma; while preventing compassion fatigue, and burnout.
