Intimate Partner Violence Risk Assessment: Defendant Accountability and Survivor Safety

Parole and probation officers are tasked to supervise offenders to ensure they are compliant and ensure community safety. These system players are one of the most versed when it comes to conducting assessments to guide leveling offenders. When thinking of where to conduct an IPV assessments, the first thought is usually by first responders and victim advocates, however opportunities to assess IPV recidivism within the probation and parole are essential as well. This workshop discusses the risk assessments best suited for the pretrial setting, illustrate examples of jurisdictions using them and how to best identify an assessment for the community for the opportunity to elevate programming for those who are causing intimate partner violence accountable.

Michelle Toledo Cainas
Program Manager, Gender and Family Justice, Center for Justice Innovation


Mrs. Toledo-Cainas is a program manager for the Gender and Family Justice team at the Center for Justice Innovation (CJI), Domestic Violence Resource for Increasing Safety and Connection project. She engages communities to identify challenges and opportunities in addressing intimate partner violence risk assessments. Before coming to CJI, Mrs. Toledo-Cainas founded the Georgia Latinos Against Domestic Violence task force in 2009 to support Latino community members and those who work with them—and has been an advocate for domestic violence cases in system and community settings. She has participated with the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Arte Sana, and the Ahimsa House boards of directors. She has presented at several national conferences including the Conference on Crime Against Women, Georgia Commission on Family Violence, National Training Institute, and the American Parole and Probation Association.


Mr. Gene Arthur Johnson, Jr.
Associate Director, Center for Justice Innovation


Mr. Gene A. Johnson, Jr. is an Associate Director of the Center for Court Innovation Gender and Family Justice Team and facilitates, develops curriculums, and provides technical assistance for battering intervention programs for men and young men. Mr.Johnson has facilitated and designed various processes to promote dialogues about masculinity and its role in society. Gene has also developed and facilitated conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice trainings and models in various New York City public schools. He is also a mediator, conflict resolution consultant, and New York State certified basic mediation trainer.
