Do Not Call Me Sweetie: Female Officers Supervising a Male Sex Offender Caseload

This workshop will investigate female probation officers supervising an Intensive Probation Supervision (IPS) Sex Offender caseload in Maricopa County, Arizona. We will focus on evaluating supervision expectations we are required to meet in this caseload. We will detail how we apply knowledge of the sex offender offense cycle and treatment. Specific cases will be analyzed to understand the effects of supervising these cases. We will discuss issues faced while supervising this population and the mistaken beliefs that male sex offenders subscribe to. We will share the challenges women face in a profession primarily dominated by males; including research-driven knowledge on steps that can be taken to support women in law enforcement. Our department–which is primarily female–is taking steps to provide mental health services to officers. The current public service research is primarily focused on the mental health of male officers. We aim to synthesize the presented problem space.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Lizette Gallardo
Adult Probation Officer, Maricopa County Adult Probation
Lizette Gallardo received her B.S. in Political Science with the minors in Communication and Criminal Justice from Arizona State University and her M.A in Criminal Justice from Arizona State University. She began her criminal justice career in 2017 with the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office as a legal assistant in the probation violation unit. In December of 2018, she worked for the Maricopa County Clerk of Superior Court as a criminal courtroom clerk. She later became a Standard Probation Officer for Maricopa County Adult probation in 2019. In June of 2020, she transferred to the sex offender division and began supervising a standard sex offender caseload. She later transitioned to the intensive probation supervision sex offender unit in March of 2021. Ms. Gallardo is a doctoral student in Psychology at Grand Canyon University.
Nayeli Quiroz
Adult Probation Officer, Maricopa County Adult Probation
Nayeli Quiroz received her Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science from Northern Arizona University in Arizona in 2013. The goal at the time was to eventually obtain her Doctorate Degree and become a Physical Therapist, however she helped other people in other careers and eventually chose to become a probation officer. She has been in the department as an Adult Probation Officer for almost 4.5 years. About 1.5 of those years have been as an Intensive Probation Officer in the Sex Offender Division. Prior to that she was supervising a Standard caseload in the West Valley. Through this journey, Ms. Quiroz has been able to work with men, women, children and the elderly during some of the most vulnerable times of their lives and being a probation officer is no different.
Doris Tucker
Adult Probation Officer, Maricopa County Adult Probation
Doris Tucker received her B.A. in Criminal Justice from California State University, San Bernardino in 2015. She began her career with Maricopa County Adult Probation in October 2018 as an Adult Probation Officer supervising a standard caseload. In November 2020, she transferred to her current assignment in the Sex Offender division and supervises an Intensive Probation Supervision-Sex Offender caseload. This will be the third time Officer Tucker has presented at an APPA conference.
