SESSION INFO

Sunday, June 30, 2024
2:45 PM - 3:45 PM
Session Type: Workshop

Despite the efforts of the criminal justice system, there continues to be an increase in impaired driving fatalities in this country. Since 1982, well over 400,000 men, women, and children have been killed in the 100% preventable act of impaired driving, with many of these deaths coming at the hands of individuals with prior DWI convictions. How can we address the unique risk factors of this population in a way that promotes recovery while stopping the cycle of recidivism? This interactive presentation addresses some of the traditional methods that we often take with this challenging population and offers alternatives to traditional DWI technologies, risk assessment tools, and approaches to supervision. Topics will include stigma-free technologies, the impact of trauma and mental health disorders within the DWI population, consideration of the language we use, and evidence-based intervention strategies.
