Community supervision is a high stakes business. Poor performance and mistakes at the field officer level can have serious and long-term consequences for our communities and our clients. Additionally, staff turnover has many negative impacts on our agencies. Cost to train/cost to replace can be significant and other officers are left to pick up the caseloads as vacancies are filled. This session will review the coaching model developed by the Nebraska Board of Parole – Division of Parole Supervision (DPS) to identify performance issues and their underlying causes and develop individualized coaching plans to improve performance and increase employee engagement. Also included in this session will be discussion of the communication plan between coach, officer, and supervisor and the process for transitioning out of coaching.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Denny Campbell
Training Supervisor, NE Board of Parole/Division of Parole Supervision
Denny Campbell, CPTD, has served as the Training and Staff Development Supervisor for the Nebraska Board of Parole - Division of Parole Supervision (DPS) since 2016. During this time, Denny has overseen the creation of the first internal training program for the DPS. Denny has worked in Corrections/Parole since 2009 and has held both front line and supervisory positions in institutions and the community. He first became involved with training as an instructor for Motivational Interviewing and has never wanted to do anything other than training since. He is certified to teach a wide range of curricula from the University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute, NIC, LETRA and others. He holds a BS in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. In 2020 Denny earned the credential of Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) from the Association for Talent Development. He was honored to be part of the team that received the 2017 APPA Presidential Award. denison.campbell@nebraska.gov
Heather Todd-Roberson
Specialized Parole Officer / Acting Supervisor, Nebraska State Probation
Heather Todd-Roberson has served as a parole officer with the Division of Parole Supervision (DPS) since 2012 and as a trainer for DPS officers since February 2021. She has also served as an acting supervisor for the Omaha field office for DPS. Heather previously worked as a caseworker in the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services and over the course of 10 years there engaged with various incarcerated populations, including inmates with serious mental illness and sex offenders. She holds a BS in Criminal Justice from Weber State University. heather.roberson@nebraska.gov
