Medications to Treat Opioid Use: What do Community Corrections Staff Need to Know to Support Individuals on Supervision?

The cost associated with untreated opioid use disorders is significant. Untreated opioid use disorders contribute to a return to criminal activity, reincarceration, and risky behavior. Probation officers play an important role in connecting individuals to evidence-based treatment, including medication to treat opioid use, and helping clients overcome barriers to treatment, including stigma. This session will offer attendees the opportunity to learn more about how medication to treat opioid use disorders work from a medical expert as well as a chance to discuss many of the common questions that officers have about using medications to support recovery.

Nasir H. Naqvi
Addiction Psychiatry, Columbia University
Nasir Naqvi, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and serves as the Program Director for the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, as well as the Director of the Gambling Disorder Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Naqvi is also a translational neuroscientist whose research focuses on neural mechanisms of behavior change in treatments for alcohol use disorder. Dr. Naqvi is a practicing addiction psychiatrist with extensive experience in the treatment of opioid use disorder, and as fellowship director he plays a role in the training of psychiatrists in medication treatments for opioid use disorder. Dr. Naqvi also provides clinical and educational expertise to the Opioid Response Network, which is a SAMHSA-funded program aimed at providing technical assistance to providers and health systems on the medical treatment of opioid use disorder.
