The New Science of Attention: How It Informs Health, Safety, & Success for Probation & Parole Officers

This workshop addresses the risks to health in probation and parole work. Simple, research-based practices to mitigate risks and self-regulate attention and job/ life stress will be offered. Learn why our attention is our most precious resource. Guided practices will include attention training and breath regulation. Participants will learn about the three types of attention and how to better focus amidst job and life demands; complicated by the inherent distractions of life today. The basics of the human autonomic nervous system will be presented showing how to self-regulate and elicit the relaxation response. The presenter is a former parole officer with 15 years in the field and 42 years in criminal justice and corrections. He is a certified mindfulness teacher through the Engaged Mindfulness Institute and a trainer with the Center for Mindfulness in Public Safety.

Mr Robert J. Ohlemiller
Deputy Commissioner, IN Department of Correction


Robert Ohlemiller is a retired criminal justice professional. In retirement he enjoys activities with family including his wife, Deborah Moore, 3 adult children and six grandchildren. He retired August 2016 from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (Indiana) where he served as program director (civilian) after departing the Indiana Department of Correction in 2005. His 31 + year career with IDOC included work as a prison counselor, parole officer and a community corrections and program administrator. He served as a deputy commissioner during his final eleven years with IDOC. He is a certified mindfulness facilitator (300 hour) through the Engaged Mindfulness Institute. Mr. Ohlemiller has experience with the Center for Mindfulness in Public Safety as a facilitator of “Mindfulness-Based Wellness & Resiliency®.” Mr. Ohlemiller has co-hosted the Mindful Public Safety Hour, hosted by the Center for Mindfulness in Public Safety since April 2020. MPSH is a weekly wellness video call for criminal justice professionals, police, fire, probation & parole and first responders. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and a Masters in Public Administration from Ball State University. He completed leadership training and other skills training through the National Institute of Correction.
