SESSION INFO
Tuesday, August 29, 2023
3:15 PM - 4:15 PM
Session Type: Workshop
The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) will present on the process of getting a survey (or major survey changes) approved for collection in the Federal government and discuss the proposed changes to the next iteration of the Annual Probation Survey. The presentation will focus on Office of Management and Budget (OMB) review and approval, upcoming changes to the APS, and the implications of these changes on probation agency reporters and on the statistics that BJS reports annually. BJS will also briefly discuss the Federal Interagency Technical Working Group on Race and Ethnicity Standards work to review and develop recommendations for revising OMB's 1997 Statistical Policy Directive No. 15: Standards for Maintaining, Collecting, and Presenting Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity (SPD 15). Additionally, BJS will provide updates on their community corrections data collections. This will include information from recently released community corrections reports, including Probation and Parole in the United States, 2021. This report presents statistics on adults under community supervision, including trends in the size and characteristics of the overall community supervision population, and statistical trends related to those populations. Finally, presenters will discuss in-progress and planned research and development activities on the Annual Surveys of Probation and Parole, including state-level longitudinal files and a reference document describing probation operations by state and court type.
