Human Trafficking can take many forms and be very difficult to recognize, especially in the criminal justice system. It is a thriving business that exists in every corner of the United States due to demand. This presentation will focus on identifying the signs and red flags of sex and labor trafficking as it may present, what the appropriate response should be and help identify what resources are available in your community. Discussions will be held regarding developing your own multi-disciplinary team approach to human trafficking and how court systems can integrate services into pre-trial and probation/parole supervision.

SESSION PRESENTERS

Laurie McGehee
Executive Director, The FREE Coalition, Inc.


Laurie McGehee is a 39 year veteran of the Juvenile Justice System serving in many different capacities. She has developed several specialized Courts in the Juvenile Court for Caddo Parish in Shreveport, Louisiana; most recently the STAR Court Program for victims of Human Trafficking. She has developed gender specific programming for both males and females at the Court and has participated in Juvenile Justice Reform efforts such as the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative with the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Louisiana Models for Change with the MacArthur Foundation. Laurie has served on the Louisiana Governor's Human Trafficking Commission and Advisory Board and the Restorative Justice Advisory Board. She is a nationally recognized speaker and trainer for Restorative Probation Practices, Human Trafficking, Trauma and Adolescent Development. Laurie was the 2014 recipient of the the Done E. Wydra Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. For the last 15 and 1/2 years, she served the Court as the Chief Probation Officer. For 18 years she has presented the Probation Officer Certification Training at the Louisiana Governor's Conference on Juvenile Justice. She retired from the Juvenile Court for Caddo Parish in March of 2024 and now devotes her time and energy to her passion which is anti-human trafficking work. She started a non-profit organization called The FREE Coalition, Inc. to continue her work in human trafficking in May 2024. She is currently servicing as Vice-President of the Shreveport Mayor's Women's Commission. She lives and works in Shreveport, Louisiana
