Those of us who denounce biases, stereotypes, and prejudice may still engage in biased behavior. Why? Because implicit biases operate outside our conscious awareness even as they affect our perceptions and behavior. They are a key aspect of the processes by which our brain attempts to categorize and make sense of the world around us. Identifying and managing these biases is possible and, importantly, imperative to providing safe, effective and just community supervision. This session provides an introduction to the science of implicit bias and discusses how biases might manifest in the probation, parole and pretrial environments. Leaders will explore how to reduce and manage their own biases and implement critical strategies to reduce the risk of biased behavior on the part of their personnel.

Lorie Fridell
Professor, University of South Florida
Lorie Fridell, PhD is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Criminology at the Lorie Fridell, PhD is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Criminology at the University of South Florida in Tampa and the founder of Fair and Impartial Policing. She is a national expert on bias and how it might manifest in criminal justice agencies. She has written several books and numerous chapters and academic articles on the topic of bias. Dr. Fridell has presented on bias-related topics to academic audiences, but also has extensive experience translating this science into presentations for professionals. Dr. Fridell and colleagues have been providing implicit bias awareness training to law enforcement and other criminal justice professionals for over a decade.
