There's No Such Thing as Bad Art: How Art Activities can be Used as Effective Interventions in Community Supervision

From ancient times to present day, art is an integral part of the human experience. This workshop explores the benefits of appreciating and creating art as as well as a concept that is may not be talked about enough: how art activities can be used in correctional settings as effective interventions. Attendees will learn about which criminogenic needs the arts-based interventions can target as well as real-life experiences from justice-involved individuals who have expressed themselves through art. Attendees of this class will be immersed into an artistic activity that can be used as an intervention in meetings with the justice involved individuals they work with. The class will reflect on how the they felt completing the activity and if they came to any realizations they can utilize as life lessons.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Summer Rodgers
Team Leader, Marion County Community Corrections
Summer Rodgers graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Public Affairs Management from Indiana University-Indianapolis-- formerly known as IUPUI. Going on 5 years working at Marion County Community Corrections, Summer has been Case Manager, Team Leader, Drug and Reentry Court Liaison, and Employee Engagement Committee Chair. Summer has always explored innovative ways to make a meaningful and positive impact on her clients. As a case manager, she took initiative to find efficient ways to get though daily activities such as alert handing and documentation. As a Team Leader, she has never fell short when creating team building activities, engaging coaching sessions, and informative team meetings. She is well versed in Evidence Based practices, but continues to expands her knowledge on the correctional field by attending various trainings- in 2023, she reached the "100 Club" at Marion County Community Corrections by having over 100 training hours that year. She is known around the office as creative and passionate about her work. After attending APPA training institutes, Summer was inspired to become a presenter to share ideas on effective interventions that she has used at her agency.
