You probably know that almost every family in America has been affected by the criminal legal system or substance use disorders. And if you can answer “yes” to any of the following questions, pertaining to both youth and adults, then you understand the importance of the work of community supervision.
Do you know an individual who has been a victim of a crime?
Do you know an individual who has struggled with an alcohol or drug problem?
Do you know an individual who has mental disorders and landed in the legal system?
Do you know an individual who is/was at a point in their lives when effective intervention is/was crucial?
Do you know an individual who has ever been arrested and/or incarcerated?
Do you know an individual who deserves a second chance?
Are you one of the three million individuals currently on probation or parole (or previously on supervision)?
APPA is dedicated to reducing recidivism and enhancing community safety, while reinforcing the vital role of community supervision.
With your support, we can transform the stigma surrounding individuals on probation or parole.
For 50 years, the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) has been committed to positively transforming lives and serving as a vital partner with community supervision agencies across the country. APPA, a not-for-profit (501c3) organization, and is the leading professional membership organization for probation and parole professionals.... It is guided by the realization that many of the 1.9 million individuals incarcerated in America will return to our communities and with proper resources and support, can become law abiding, prosocial citizens. Community supervision staff provide a pathway back to work, school, and community – essentially giving individuals a second chance while still holding them accountable.
In 2025, APPA will celebrate this 50-year milestone. It is the perfect time to ramp up our efforts to champion community supervision. We must continue to be at the forefront of advancing the work of roughly 90,000 men and women who are committed to promoting safer, healthier communities. The importance of this aspect of the legal system is not just to those who work in the field, but to every single citizen of our country – because it impacts all communities. Today, we are asking you to be part of the solution – to help provide funds to add value to the training and technical assistance offerings to the field. Remember, better trained community supervision officers equates to positive outcomes for individuals and improved communities for all!
