Project Safe Neighborhood Online Training

PSN Update

Beginning in the Fall of 2013 the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) began including a column specific to Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) in its quarterly journal Perspectives. The column is devoted to issues pertinent to PSN including street gangs, gun violence, and interagency collaboration (e.g., police-probation partnerships). Manuscripts are welcome and may be submitted to tjohnson@csg.org and perspectives@csg.org. Papers may be generally 1000-1500 words in length and follow the submission guidelines of the Perspectives journal. Articles published to date appear below.

About PSN

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is a nationwide initiative aimed at the reduction of gun and gang violence. Heavily influenced by programs such as Compstat, Operation Ceasefire, and Exile, PSN was originally aimed at reducing gun violence. Today PSN’s focus has shifted to a predominantly anti-gang initiative, though guns are tied heavily to gang violence and remain a secondary focus. Administered by the 94 U.S. District Attorney’s Offices, APPA is one of many partners who are authorized to provide PSN training to local jurisdictions.

Guns, safety and proactive supervision: Involving probation and parole in Project Safe Neighborhoods
In this report written by Mr. Bob Thornton and colleagues, the impact of illegal guns on community supervision and the importance of involving community corrections in PSN are discussed. PSN partnerships such as Operation Homefront, Caught in the Crossfire, and In My Shoes are also presented.

Project Safe Neighborhoods: A national program to reduce gun crime
Dr. Edmund F. McGarrell and colleagues provide a comprehensive review of PSN. The report highlights the success of collaboration, difficulty in obtaining crime data on gun crimes, use of federal prosecution, with various intervention and prevention strategies. Results showed high federal prosecution districts experienced a 13.1% decrease in violent crime.
